The child-friendly online game Wizard101 celebrates its third birthday on September 2 –and like a real kid, it’s growing fast.
In July, owner KingsIsle Entertainment announced that Wizard101 had reached 20 million registered users. That same month, 13 million unique visitors went to Wizard101.com –nearly 200% year over year growth. In August, the company announced an agreement with Chinese media company Taomee Holdings to launch Wizard101 in China. And just a few weeks ago, it launched a significant in-game expansion, adding three zones for players to explore inside a new area called Wysteria.
Earlier this year, a study by researchers from Trinity University which surveyed more than 30,000 Wizard101 players, gave evidence for the game’s educational and social value; 55% of respondents said they had learned skills including reading, math, and time and financial management. About one out of every five respondents said they play with their parents or grandparents.
Wizard101 competes in the kiddie MMORPG market against games like Disney’s Club Penguin and Sony’sFree Realms.
