In an internal email first publicized by a Times’ journalist on Twitter, Tom Mockridge, CEO of News Corp’s British publishing subsidiary News International, announced that the billionaire media magnate’s decision “is part of the preparation of the business for the upcoming restructure into two companies.” In June, News Corp. announced that it would be splitting into two separate companies, including one that focused on publishing and another whose main interest will be television and entertainment. “I wanted to let you know that Rupert Murdoch has resigned as director of a number of companies, including NI Group Limited, known to most of you as News International, and Times Newspapers Holdings Limited,” wrote Mockridge, in the email. A portion of the email has been published by Reuters.
“As you may be aware, Rupert resigned from a number of UK boards, including News Group Newspapers and Times Newspapers Limited, some time ago,” the email continued. ”He has also stepped down from more than a dozen boards of companies with interests in the U.S., Australia and India.”
Murdoch’s decision comes a year after he faced a British investigation into claims of phone hacking made against papers owned and operated by News International. In the fallout that ensued from the investigation, News International ended publication of its News Of The World, which was then followed by the resignation of then-News International CEO Rebekah Brooks. In February, Rupert’s son, James, stepped down as chairman of News International.
